Jiuzhaigou Valley is like a colorful pearl, located about 400 kilometers north of Chengdu. The valley is easily accessible from Chengdu by high-speed train. In 1992, it was listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and is also one of China’s most important nature reserves. Unlike many reserves that focus on wildlife protection, Jiuzhaigou was established primarily to preserve its breathtaking scenery—clear evidence of just how extraordinary its natural beauty is.
What to See in Jiuzhaigou ValleyWhat's Included
Plateau Lakes and Waterfalls
Jiuzhaigou Valley is home to 108 colorful plateau lakes, including the famous Five-Color Lake and Five-Flower Lake. Many lakes lie along mountain slopes, creating stunning waterfalls where the water cascades down. Nuorilang Waterfall and Pearl Beach Waterfall are must-see highlights of the scenic area.

Peaks and Valleys
Located between the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, Jiuzhaigou features a dramatic landscape of towering karst peaks and deep, winding valleys, offering breathtaking views at every turn.
Forests
Around 80% of the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area is covered by vegetation. Many forests, such as those in the Rize Valley, remain untouched and original. As the seasons change, the forests transform in color—though not all at once—creating a constantly vibrant and layered landscape.
Tibetan Villages
"Jiuzhai" means "nine villages" in Chinese, referring to the nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout the valley. Most residents practice Tibetan Buddhism, giving visitors the chance to experience traditional Buddhist customs and, at certain times, take part in local festivals.

Snow Views
Snow-capped mountains welcome visitors year-round in Jiuzhaigou. Peaks rising above 3,500 meters have been snow-covered for over a million years. In winter, frozen waterfalls and frost-covered trees turn the valley into a magical ice-and-snow wonderland.
Recommended Sightseeing Routes
The Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area is shaped like a reversed “Y.” Both the entrance and exit are located at the northern end of the valley, at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. Starting your visit from this lower elevation helps visitors adjust more comfortably before heading to higher areas.
Morning Route
Enter the scenic area before 8:30 am for a quieter and more enjoyable experience. Take a sightseeing bus to Arrow Bamboo Lake, then continue north past Panda Lake and Panda Lake Waterfall, Five-Flower Lake (best viewed from the Tiger Mouth Observation Deck), and Pearl Beach Waterfall.
By around 12:00 pm, take a sightseeing bus to the Nuorilang Tourist Center for lunch.

Lunch Options
The Nuorilang Tourist Center, located at the midpoint of the scenic area, is the only place where meals are available. Visitors can choose from Chinese fast food and street food options such as Lanzhou beef noodles, Sichuan dumplings, and sour and spicy rice noodles. Lunch service runs from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. The center also has a smoking area and a medical room. Bringing your own food into Jiuzhaigou Valley is allowed.
Afternoon Route
After lunch, take a sightseeing bus to Long Lake, the highest point in the scenic area at 3,100 meters. Then walk downhill along the plank road to Five-Color Lake, before taking a bus to Nuorilang Waterfall.
From there, head toward the exit, passing Rhinoceros Lake, Tiger Lake, Shuzheng Lake and Shuzheng Waterfall, and Reed Lake. Finally, take a sightseeing bus back to the exit to complete your visit.

Two-Day Visit Suggestion
If you have two days in Jiuzhaigou, it is recommended to explore the more remote areas, including the Original Forests, Grass Lake, and Swan Lake, which offer a quieter and more pristine natural experience.
Please note that Jiuzhaigou Valley does not offer two-day tickets. If you plan to visit over two days, you must exit the scenic area and purchase a new entrance ticket for the second day.
Responsible Travel
Over thousands of years, calcium carbonate has gradually attached to rocks, wood, and even sand on the lake beds of Jiuzhaigou Valley, creating the lakes’ famous vibrant colors under the sunlight. Any litter—or even touching the water by hand—can disrupt this natural process, causing the colors to fade.
To protect this fragile environment, no hotels are allowed within the scenic area. Every visitor shares the responsibility of preserving Jiuzhaigou Valley’s natural beauty for future generations.
Entry Time Slots
There are three time slots available for entering the Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic Area. Please indicate your preferred entry time when completing the booking form. Visitors must enter within the selected time slot—late entry will not be permitted.
