Nestled in the Jundu Mountains of Yanqing District, the Badaling Great Wall served as the northern gateway to Beijing and was one of the most strategically important sections of the Ming Great Wall.
Renowned for its well-preserved fortifications, exquisite brickwork, and numerous inscribed stone tablets, Badaling attracts millions of visitors each year. As part of the Great Wall, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
Most of the watchtowers on the Badaling Great Wall are very well preserved. Exploring these ancient structures offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the historical military atmosphere of the Great Wall. Additionally, the panoramic mountain views from Badaling are truly spectacular.
Perched at an elevation of 888 meters (2,913 feet), the North No. 8 Watchtower is the highest point of the Badaling Great Wall and its most iconic landmark. It is also one of the most famous locations along the entire Great Wall.
From the top of the watchtower, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Great Wall as it winds across the ridgelines.
North No. 4 Watchtower is one of the best viewpoints along the Badaling Great Wall. From the top, visitors can admire the Great Wall winding gracefully over the mountain ridges like a mighty Chinese dragon—a breathtaking scene that has become one of Badaling's most iconic landscapes.
North No. 2 and No. 6 Watchtowers offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the soldiers who once guarded the Great Wall. Inside North No. 2 Watchtower, you can see a stone bed and a wall niche that once held an oil lamp. In North No. 6 Watchtower, inscriptions carved by Ming Dynasty soldiers can still be found on the walls, recording aspects of their daily duties and lives.
On the way to the North No. 2 watchtower stands the celebrated stone tablet bearing the inscription “不到长城非好汉” ("He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true hero"). This famous quote has become a symbol of the Great Wall and is frequently featured in travel posters, promotional videos, and photographs.
These well-preserved relics provide valuable insight into the living and working conditions of the soldiers stationed along the Great Wall centuries ago.
This section attracts fewer visitors than the more famous parts of the Badaling Great Wall, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a quieter experience. With denser vegetation and older-looking brickwork, it offers a more authentic atmosphere and is especially popular with hiking enthusiasts.
From North No. 11 Watchtower, visitors can take a mountain trail directly to the exit, allowing them to complete the route without retracing their steps.
The South Line, stretching from South No. 1 to South No. 7 Watchtower, is open to visitors. Compared with the North Line, this section is generally less crowded, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful walk and take in the scenery at a relaxed pace.
