Located on the northern slopes of Mount Ling, Wangxian Valley is renowned for its dramatic valley landscapes, waterfalls, Buddhist and Taoist temples, rare wildlife, and rich local culture. In recent years, many travelers have chosen to visit Wangxian Valley instead of Yellow Mountain, as the two share similar scenery and elevation.
Legend Behind the Name of the Valley
Wangxian means "looking at an immortal from afar" in Chinese. According to an ancient legend, an elderly official refused to serve a cruel ruler and chose instead to become a Taoist hermit.
He practiced Taoism on a mountain within the valley. To ensure his father’s safety, his son would look up at the mountain from the valley floor twice a month. In time, the Taoist attained immortality and went on to perform many good deeds for the local people.
In honor of the immortal and this touching story, the locals named the place Wangxian Valley.
Recommended Sightseeing Route
The tourist center (entrance) is located on the western side of the valley, so visitors begin sightseeing by traveling from west to east. The exit is about 200 meters south of the entrance, which means visitors return to the western side to complete their visit.
A stream runs through the valley, dividing it into a north bank and a south bank. It is recommended to start sightseeing along the north bank and return to the exit via the south bank. This route allows visitors to avoid seeing the same attractions twice while enjoying a more efficient and varied experience. Please refer to the recommended attractions below. It takes around eight hours to cover all the highlighted sights.
Three-Tier Waterfall
Two mountain streams meet here and cascade down in three distinct tiers, forming a series of beautiful waterfalls. As the first attraction visitors encounter upon entering the valley, the three waterfalls resemble flowing welcome curtains greeting guests to Wangxian Valley.
The Three-Tier Waterfall also marks the entrance to the waterfall area. From here, visitors will pass Wangxian Waterfall, Weird Stone Beach, and a glass plank road, all of which are located within this scenic section.

Yanpu Ancient Street
About 500 years ago, the street flourished thanks to limestone mining in the nearby mountains. Many tea houses, blacksmith shops, carpenters’ workshops, restaurants, and post houses were established to serve the miners. Today, these well-preserved historic relics have become the main attractions of Yanpu Ancient Street.
Hu Family Ancestral Hall
Still remember the Taoist hermit in the Legend? His name was Hu Zhao, and the hall was built in honor of him and his family. The indoor decoration and stone and wood carvings reflects local people’s respect towards the hermit.
Three-God Temple
In ancient times, there were hundreds of temples throughout the valley. As villagers gradually left their hometown in search of better opportunities, most of these temples fell into ruin. Fortunately, the Three-God Temple has survived.
The temple is dedicated to three deities: the God of Wealth, the God of Land (for safety and protection), and the Dragon King (for favorable weather).
Tourist Activities
To get closer to local life, visitors can take part in hands-on experiences that reflect the daily work of local people, such as tea making, painting, wood carving, and bamboo basket weaving. If you lose track of time while enjoying these activities, no problem—why not stay and admire the night views?
