How to Travel from Tokyo to Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is one of Japan's most popular natural wonders. It is located in the west of Tokyo and the distance between the two places is about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

From Tokyo to Mount Fuji, there are two ways of transportation, by train or by bus. In 2019, a direct train from Tokyo to Mount Fuji opened, which greatly facilitates the travel between the two places.

From Tokyo to Mount Fuji by Train

Before 2019, there is only one rail route from Tokyo to Mount Fuji, from Otsuku Station, a station in Yamanashi Prefecture, to Fuji Station and Kawaguchiko Station. A new rail route called Fuji Excursion opened in 2019 directly from Shinjuku Station to Fuji Station and Kawaguchiko Station, which shortened the travel time by 30 minutes.

Please note that JR Pass does not apply to the rail route from Otsuku Station to Mounti Fuji.

Option one:

Shinjuku Station -- Otsuku Station – Fuji Station – Kawaguchiko Station.

Otsuku Station is actually far from Tokyo City. You need to take a JR express train from Shinjuku Station to Otsuku Station, the journey duration is about an hour. It takes about 50 minutes from Otsuku Station to Fuji Station by train, and 20 minutes from Fuji Station to Kawaguchiko by train.

Option two (Fuji Excursion):

Shinjuku Station – Fuji Station – Kawaguchiko Station

The whole journey of from Shinjuku Station to Kwaguchiko Station by Fuji Excursion is about 1 hour and 50 minutes. There are two pairs of Fuji Excursion in service every day.
