How can I book tickets for Vietnamese trains?

  • Through a trusted ticket agent (like us!) - For a hassle-free booking experience, you can book through our team. Simply email us at fabio@chinahighlights.com, and we’ll help you arrange your tickets quickly and easily.
  • Via the official website dsvn.vn - The website offers an English version, but some sections may not be fully translated. For a smoother experience, we suggest using your browser’s translation tool or a translation add-on.
  • Through the official mobile app - The official app may not be available in all countries. To check availability, search for “Vé tàu” in your mobile app store. Note that the app interface is primarily in Vietnamese.

How far in advance should I book Vietnamese train tickets?

We recommend booking your train tickets at least 10 days before your departure date to ensure seat availability.

If you’re traveling during peak periods—such as New Year, Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), or other national holidays—it’s best to book at least one month in advance, as trains can sell out quickly and your preferred seats may no longer be available.

What types of train tickets can I book in Vietnam?

Vietnamese trains offer the following ticket types:

  • Soft seat tickets – Comfortable, air-conditioned seats suitable for daytime journeys.
  • Sleeper tickets in 6-berth cabins – Shared cabins with 6 beds (3 on each side), offering a more economical option for overnight travel.
  • Sleeper tickets in 4-berth cabins – More spacious cabins with 4 beds (2 on each side). This is the most comfortable and also the most expensive option.

If you're traveling in a group of 11 or more people, you may be eligible for group discounts, depending on the train route. Feel free to contact us in advance to check availability and rates.

How can I pay for Vietnamese train tickets?

  • Online bookings: You can pay using PayPal when booking through authorized agents or certain websites. Some platforms may also accept international credit cards.
  • At the train station: Payments can only be made in Vietnamese Dong (VND) and in cash. Credit cards and foreign currencies are not accepted at most stations.

Do I need to collect paper train tickets in Vietnam?

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, you can usually board the train by scanning a QR code from your phone—no paper ticket needed.

However, in most other cities, you’ll need to collect a physical paper ticket either at the station or at a designated pick-up location.

If you book with us, we’ll make it easy by delivering the paper tickets directly to your hotel.

Is there food service on Vietnamese trains?

Yes, food service is available both onboard the train and at major train stations. You’ll find a mix of local Vietnamese dishes and some Western-style options.

However, as the quality and variety may vary, we recommend bringing your own snacks or meals, especially if you have dietary preferences or specific needs.

Are trains in Vietnam usually on time?

Not always. Trains that depart from major starting stations like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City are more likely to leave on time.

However, at mid-way stations, delays are common, and trains often arrive later than scheduled. It’s not unusual for trains to be 30 minutes or more behind—especially on longer routes.

If you’re planning a tight itinerary, it’s best to allow extra time and avoid booking back-to-back connections.

What facilities are available at train stations in Vietnam?

Most Vietnamese train stations offer a range of basic amenities, including:

  • ATMs
  • Waiting halls
  • Left-luggage offices
  • Restrooms
  • Washing sinks
  • Restaurants and convenience stores

At larger stations like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll find more developed facilities. For example, passengers taking luxury trains such as SP3 from Hanoi may have access to VIP waiting lounges for added comfort.

Do you have any tips for traveling on Vietnamese trains?

Yes, here are some helpful onboard tips to ensure a smoother journey:

  • Keep an eye on your belongings: While theft is not common, it's still wise to stay cautious. If you're in a soft seat carriage, you can lock your luggage under your seat for added security.
  • No smoking: Smoking is strictly prohibited onboard all trains in Vietnam.
  • Language tip: Onboard announcements are usually only in Vietnamese. We recommend bringing a translation app or device, and informing a staff member of your destination so they can alert you when to get off.

How can I travel between train stations and my hotel in Vietnam?

The most convenient option is to take a taxi. While public buses are available, the bus stops are often far from hotels, meaning you may still need to walk a considerable distance.

Taxi tips:

  • Some drivers may try to negotiate a fixed price. Regardless of the fare agreed upon, they are required to issue an invoice.
  • Always ask for an invoice (biên lai) at the end of your ride to avoid misunderstandings or overcharging.
  • For peace of mind, you can also consider using ride-hailing apps like Grab, which offer transparent pricing and easier communication.

What is Vietnam Railways’ cancellation policy?

The cancellation fees depend on how far in advance you cancel:

  • More than 24 hours before departure: 10% cancellation fee per ticket
  • Between 24 and 4 hours before departure: 20% cancellation fee per ticket
  • Less than 4 hours before departure: Tickets are non-refundable (100% charge)

Please note that refund policies may vary slightly depending on the ticket type and booking method. It's best to check the exact terms when purchasing.
